History of the network’s formation

26th january 2021
First meeting of the founding circle of the European Network of University Cities
  • First virtual meeting of about twenty French local authorities in order to discuss the challenges faced by local actors in the support and development of mobility, the latest developments at European level, and the interest of collaboration between local authorities on these issues.
  • Main points raised:
    • The need to share best practices and contacts between local authorities and mobility stakeholders.
    • The difficulty of calibrating certain mobility support measures, particularly for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
    • The new features introduced by the Erasmus+ program during the new 2021-2027 period.
Spring 2021
Diagnosis phase
  • Contact with all the communities present during the webinar of January 26 + communities members of the AVUF.
  • Conducting interviews with the following objectives: to carry out an inventory in each community of the support mechanisms for inbound and/or outbound mobility; to address the current challenges encountered regarding the issue of mobility; to study the possibilities of partnership at the European level in relation to this issue; to discuss about expectations of the European network of university towns.

Second meeting of the founding circle of the European Network of University Cities
  • Objectives of the meeting : to present the results of the diagnostic phase and some innovative initiatives related to the support of mobility; definition of the main lines of work concerning the European network of university towns; exchange around the progressive integration of other mobility actors and the issue of Europeanization of the network.
  • The network’s six major areas of interest:
      • More open, accessible and inclusive mobilities.
      • Better supported and integrated individuals.
      • Diversifying mobility paths.
      • Enriching mobility paths: more « meaningful » experiences.
      • Collaborate with higher education, research and training institutions.
Summer 2021
Structuration and Europeanisation of the network
  • Deepening of the network with the search for new partners within the AVUF member communities.
  • Accompaniment of the communities already involved in the network in order to involve the actors of the academic and associative world.
  • Research with the communities of partners at the European level and contacts.
  • Main objective: to invite all the actors of mobility in order to engage global reflections within the framework of the European network of university towns.

First workshop of the European Network of University Cities
  • The first of a series of three workshops to address in a more practical way some of the recurring issues faced by mobility stakeholders.
  • A first workshop devoted to the issue of inclusion and accessibility of mobility to the most remote groups.
  • Topics covered: financial support systems, information challenges, support capacities, help from associations, opening up mobility to people with disabilities.
22nd September 2021
Launching webinar of the European Network of University Cities
  • Formalisation of the constitution of the network by inviting both French and European local authorities, as well as all the components of the local ecosystems linked to mobility (higher education, research and training establishments, representatives of the associative world, players in the field of influence and international cooperation of local authorities).
  • Presence of European local authorities: Katowice (Poland), Parma and Padua (Italy), Viana do Castello (Portugal), Freiburg-im-Breisgau and Dortmund (Germany), Nyíregyháza (Hungary).
  • Speeches by numerous elected officials and representatives of European local authorities in order to formalise their expectations of the network and initiate the first avenues of partnership at European level.
  • Exchanges concerning the draft charter framing the action of the future network, but also the opportunities offered by a global collaboration at local level to support and develop mobility.

12th and 13th May 2022
Meeting in Brussels
  • The opportunity to exchange between members of the network for the first time.
  • A focus on the European strategy for universities and the future challenges and opportunities of developing mobility in Europe.
  • Further consolidation and concretisation of the network via the solemn adoption of the network’s constitutive charter.
